Violinist Augustin Hadelich joins Festival Orchestra musicians for an evening of chamber music featuring Brahmsā€™s Sextet No. 1 in B-flat Major. Itā€™s a work of infectious joie de vivre, offering both songs and dances alongside lively musical conversations between the two violins, two violas, and two cellos. The second movementā€™s theme and variations have been featured in settings as diverse as Star Trek: The Next Generation and the 2001 French film The Piano Teacher.

Season Finale: Mahler 5

After hearing Sasha Cooke sing Mahlerā€™s RĆ¼ckert Lieder on August 10, audiences may recognize some themes in tonightā€™s symphony. The fourth movement, the Adagietto, draws explicitly from the Lieder and is recognized as a love letter from Mahler to his wife, Alma. Leonard Bernstein famously led the New York Philharmonic in a performance of the heartbreakingly beautiful Adagietto at Robert Kennedyā€™s funeral service in 1968. The rest of the symphony is pretty good, too.

Upbeat with Alasdair: Why Brahms?

The Sun Valley Music Festival is pleased to present a new Upbeat with Alasdair talk, featuring pianist Jon Kimura Parker, Concertmaster Jeremy Constant, and Principal Cello Amos Yang in conversation with Music Director Alasdair Neale. Parker will feature prominently in the Festivalā€™s upcoming Winter Season concerts at the Argyros, March 6-9. This yearā€™s program, entitled ā€œThe Romance of Brahms,ā€ is the first time the Festivalā€™s Winter Season will focus on the music of a single composer: Johannes Brahms. Accordingly, in this edition of the popular series of talks, Neale, Parker, and two Festival musicians, Jeremy Constant and Amos Yang will explore the music of Brahms, revealing why Brahms continues to be such a beloved composer both for musicians and audiences. The Romance of Brahms (Program A)

The Sun Valley Music Festival presents its sixth Winter Season at the Argyros Performing Arts Center, from March 6 to 9. The 2024 Winter Season focuses on ā€œThe Romance of Brahmsā€ and offers two chamber music programs specially curated by Music Director Alasdair Neale, featuring pianist Jon Kimura Parker ā€” winner of the Gold Medal at the 1984 Leeds International Piano Competition ā€” and string musicians from the all-star Sun Valley Music Festival Orchestra. Presented in an intimate atmosphere, the all-Brahms programs include beloved pieces by the Romantic composer for solo piano and string ensembles, such as Hungarian Dance No. 4 in F-sharp Minor, Quintet No. 1 in F Major, Trio No. 1 in B Major, and the inventive and technically demanding Handel Variations.
Note: Two unique programs will be performed on alternating evenings: Program A on March 6 and 8, Program B on March 7 and 9.
