Fire Dance from Petite Suite for Harp
The harp is one of the oldest instruments (originating around 15,000 BC) that is still played today. It’s a fitting vehicle for the music on this program. Performed first is a work titled “Quest” from “Quest-Reunion” by Gary Shocker, a composer renowned for his melodic style and his work as one of today’s greatest flutists. Throughout the piece, contemplative phrases interplay with moments of innocence and transcendence. Following is living composer and harpist David Watkins’s award-winning “Fire Dance” from Petite Suite for Harp. Its powerful, rhythmic—and sometimes vivacious—melodies were inspired by native South American ritual dances and cultural music performed on the smaller Paraguayan harp.
